Rogue Industries: Leather Wallets and Bags Made in Maine

Stand up for a second and pat your back pocket. If you feel a brick back there, you already know where this is going.

Most of us have been sitting on a lumpy leather sandwich of receipts, expired gift cards and that one punch card for a sub shop we haven't visited since 2019. It is uncomfortable, it wrecks the shape of your pants, and according to one guy in Maine, it might be doing a number on your back too.

That guy started Rogue Industries, and the fix he came up with is still being stitched by hand in a small workshop in Standish, Maine.

A sore back and a kitchen table idea

Back in 2007, founder Michael Lyons had a problem. His bulky back pocket wallet was bugging him, and he figured it was a big part of the lower back pain he was dealing with. Moving the wallet to a front pocket seemed like the obvious answer, except regular wallets are square and front pockets are not. Anyone who has tried to cram a billfold in next to their keys knows exactly how that goes.

So he started learning about leather and design. The result was a wallet with one curved edge, shaped to follow the natural curve of a front pocket. He ended up earning two patents on the design, and the company's story grew from a family project into a business with dozens of leather goods sold in more than five hundred stores across the country.

That first wallet is still the heart of the whole operation. The homepage puts it plainly: "The best front pocket wallet in the world didn't happen by accident."

Made in Maine, powered by the sun

Here is the part we love. Rogue Industries has been "Made in Maine Since 2007," and their Made in Maine Collection is designed, cut and stitched at their own workshop on Cape Road in Standish. The Saco River runs just across the field.

And that workshop is not running on just any power. According to their sustainability page, solar covers more than 100 percent of the company's energy needs. A Maine leather shop running on sunshine. We'll take it.

One thing worth knowing before you shop: Rogue is upfront that not everything they sell is made here. Their FAQ says it straight: "Our Made in Maine Collection is made in the USA. Products not in the Made in Maine collection are not." We appreciate that kind of honesty. If you want to keep your money stateside, stick with the Made in Maine lineup or the Made in America Collection, and you'll be in great shape.

The wallet that started it all

The Rogue Front Pocket Wallet, Classic Made in Maine Edition is the original, and the company calls it "the Maine wallet that started it all." It is made from premium top grain leather, weighs just 1.4 ounces, and holds up to 12 cards plus cash in the billfold and a stash pocket. It is also RFID blocking, so nobody is skimming your credit cards in the checkout line.

Then things get fun, because Rogue makes that same curved wallet out of just about every interesting leather you can think of:

If you like the idea but want to pull bills out a little easier, check out the Nantucket Front Pocket Wallet. Rogue flipped their classic shape 180 degrees to make the billfold opening longer. When you open it up, it looks like a whale's tail, which is how it got the name.

Not sold on the front pocket thing? No judgment. The Heritage Wallet is a traditional billfold "stitched in Maine from leathers tanned right here." For the folks who carry a couple of cards and nothing else, there's The Minimalist Wallet and the slim Portland Card Case.

And for the anglers out there, the Rogue River Fly Fishing Wallet is crafted in Maine from waxed canvas, upcycled suede and Maine shearling to keep your flies safe on the water.

Bags built for the long haul

Rogue didn't stop at wallets. Their bags get the same Maine workshop treatment.

The Mount Blue Leather Duffle is the one that turns heads in the airport. Rogue calls it "the best duffle bag we've ever made," stitched in the USA from vegetable tanned bison leather with antique brass hardware. It is the kind of bag that looks better on its tenth trip than its first. The Deer Island Duffle is its newer sibling, made from lightly pebbled full grain leather that shrugs off scratches.

For everyday carry, the Fore Street Tote Bag is crafted in Maine from full grain leather that wears in beautifully. Our favorite might be the Saco River Tote Bag, named for the river right outside the workshop. In Rogue's words, they "wanted a bag that was lightweight for carrying snacks, a towel and a book down to the riverbanks." Waxed canvas on top, leather on the bottom, and a little bronze clasp to keep your keys from disappearing.

Need something smaller? The Ellis River Crossbody Bag is their lightest bag, and the Eastport Clutch pairs waxed canvas with top grain leather.

The little things

Some of the best stuff in the catalog is the small stuff. There's a Leather Key Chain, a Leather Luggage Tag, and a Waxed Canvas Dopp Kit meant to last a decade. Rogue even makes a Moose Leather Coaster Set, which they say will keep "your beer properly rested." Hard to argue with that.

Pretty much everything is backed by a two year guarantee covering defects in materials, and orders of $75 or more ship free within the US. Most wallets land somewhere between $45 and $75, which is a fair price for something you'll carry every single day for years. One reviewer said they bought one "in a store in Wyoming almost 20 years ago" and only just replaced it.

Another Maine maker on the list

We've visited Maine before, with the clever multi tools at Zootility and the boots and gear at Origin. Rogue Industries fits right in with them: a small shop that started with one guy's sore back and grew into a solar powered workshop turning out wallets and bags that'll outlast your current pair of jeans.

So go ahead and pull that brick out of your back pocket. Swap it for a Rogue Front Pocket Wallet and your back (and your pants) will thank you.

Just another great reason to buy American!
